Swimmer’s Itch report for 2025 now available
The data from this summer’s swimmer’s itch research confirms that relocation of merganser ducks reduces the incidence of human affliction. Due to the 2-year life cycle of the parasite, relocation last year (2024) cut the rate of infection in this year’s snails.
Unfortunately the Michigan DNR required the CLWA to suspend its relocation program once again this year. Research done on Crystal and other lakes now provides solid evidence for the causes of swimmer’ itch, leading to prediction that 2026 will likely bring a resurgence of cases.
The CLWA is continuing its efforts to control this problem in our lake. Thanks to all who assisted our research by reporting brood sightings and cases. CLWA’s contractor, Swimmer’s Itch Solutions, has now submitted its full report: read it HERE.
