The data from CLWA’s swimmer’s itch (SI) research this summer confirms that relocation of
merganser ducks reduces the incidence of human affliction. After two summers of suspending
the successful relocation program, SI resurged in 2026.

For the 10 th year CLWA contracted with Swimmer’s Itch Solutions (SIS) to collect 2,000 Stanicola
emarginata snails and test them for the presence of the SI causing parasite. As expected, the
infection rate increased this year due to the suspension of relocation. In fact the number of
infected snails this year was equal to the total number found in the last three years combined.
These results were collaborated by reports of cases made on-line and at the Congregational
Assembly beach.

New research has provided data on the age when merganser ducks most effectively spread the
infection, further supporting the value of removing ducklings from the affected lake. REPORT

In collaboration with other impacted lakes, the CLWA is continuing its efforts to find solutions
to the scourge of SI. Its research will continue and it provides science-based information
advising swimmers on what they can do to minimize the effects of SI while enjoying the lake.
